This serene sylvan retreat far from the maddening crowd was the culmination of one man's vision and dream. Brother Marie – Victorin harbored a passion for nature. He laid the foundation of the Botanical Institute of the Universite of Montreal. His dream of giving Montreal a botanical garden was finally realized in 1931.
This is one of the largest botanical gardens in the whole world. The gardens on site include the shady arboretum, which features willows and chestnuts among hundreds of other species. Numerous enormous greenhouses display a further 12,000 species, while the Medicinal Plant Garden offers a fascinating glimpse into the curative powers of the plant world.
Featuring a total of approximately thirty theme gardens including the First Nations, the French, the Poisonous Plants, the Japanese and the Chinese Gardens, as well as ten large exhibition greenhouses the Botanical Garden is an ideal outing that the entire family can enjoy.
Hours: Jan 4- May 14: 9am- 5pm (Tues to Sun); May 15- Sept 8: 9am- 6pm (every day); Sept 9- Oct 31: 9am- 9pm (every day); Nov 1- Dec 29: 9am- 4pm (open on Holiday Mondays).
