History of the Montreal Gazette

The Gazette is the only surviving English newspaper that is published daily in Montreal, Quebec. City of Montreal used to have three daily newspapers in English but was shut down. Originally founded in 1778 by Fleury Mesplet, the newspaper was called La Gazette du commerce et litteraire and was in French Language. The paper did not last and was shut down a year after. This did not dishearten Mesplet and she began a second newspaper circulation which became the ancestor of the Montreal Gazette. The newspaper has already celebrated its successful 150th anniversary.

The Gazette Today

At present, audience of the Montreal Gazette is primarily the English Speaking minority which is account to 8% of the total population of Quebec. It comes third in all the four daily newspapers distributed in the city. The Gazette is trying to reach the French speaking population since most of them read English since more than half of the total population of Montreal, Quebec are bilingual.
