It is one of the most popular museums in Montréal, attracting thousands of visitors for its superb presentation of exquisite pieces of art from artists both past and present.
It is one of the first museums in North America to build up an extensive collection. The museum houses over 30,000 objects painting, sculpture, works on paper, prints and drawings, photographs and decorative art objects. One of the oldest museums in Canada, its origin can be traced to the 1860's when a group of art collectors started the Art Association of Montréal. The group went about their task in building up a permanent collection. After being housed in various buildings, the museum finally found its permanent residence in 1912. It took Montreal by storm and people flocked to it.
It portrays art down the ages. Works of priceless antiquity sits cheek by jowl with modern art. Here you can drink in the beauty of the works of famous artists like Monet and Van Gogh. You can feast your eyes on works of European and Canadian artists or be transported to ancient Egypt by viewing ancient artifacts from the tomb of Tutankhamon. Over the years the museum has acquired several wings and pavilions which have added to its charm. Interesting exhibitions are held throughout the year within its galleries.
